Expatriates
With its rich history, interesting places, and laid-back lifestyle, more and more people from around Brazil and from over the world come to Salvador to experience life being an expatriate. While living as an expat is an exciting idea, especially if it is in the Bahian capital, enough knowledge about the city would prepare you in this ‘adventure’.
First things first…
Learn the city’s language. – Portuguese.
As there are very few people in Salvador that speaks English, learning to speak Portuguese should be the first thing an expatriate should do; unless you already are bilingual or have no problem communicating in the language.
Of course there are several schools in the city that offer Portuguese lessons. As a tip, you can check out any of these schools and first find out their program offerings. Ask about their Portuguese language courses, including the pace of the lessons, the teachers, and most importantly, the cost it will take it. With your information at hand, pick a program that suits your budget and your need with the language – if you intend to study in Salvador, you might have to consider an intensive course.
Another option for learning Portuguese in Salvador is by mingling with the locals. If you can find one who understands English (and better, if he/she also speaks the language), you can ask that person for some Portuguese lessons. Anyhow, the longer you stay in the Bahian capital, the more you will be at ease with the language.
Budgeting
As expats, budgeting is an important factor to stretch the money you have in the city; this is particularly true for those who haven’t found a means of living in Salvador.
The cost of living in Salvador is relatively cheaper compared to the two giant cities in the country, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. However, without job, you will still find it hard to get by in the city.
A one-way ticket for local transport costs an average of 1.20 €; monthly pass on the other hand costs around 78.54 €. If you have a car, 1 liter of gasoline is priced about 1.15 €. Utilities such as gas, water, electricity, and garbage may cost you 19.63 € a month.
A 1-bedroom apartment outside the city center costs an average of 261.79 €, while those located in the center of the city costs around 349.06 €. For apartments with 3 bedrooms, the average cost is 654.48 € and 523.58 € inside and outside the city, respectively.
Surviving in Salvador as an expat is a matter of knowing the city well and finding your way to fit in in its lifestyle.
